With his beloved wife and children by his side and holding hands, David M. “Dave” Kellogg, 49, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 4:00 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2019 at his home at Lake Warren, Monmouth.
He left this world with a full heart, few regrets and a lifetime of wonderful memories. Cancer may have filled his lungs, but his heart was filled from giving joy to others and from the love they gave him.
He is survived by his parents, Dennis L. (Deb) Kellogg and Doreen K. Hillis of Des Moines, IA; his wife, Tricia; four sons, Allen McCain of Davenport, IA, Daniel (Olivia) Kellogg of Moline, IL, Cody Kellogg of Monmouth, IL and Justin Kellogg of New Baden, IL; a daughter, MacKenzie Kellogg of Kirksville, MO.; one grandson, Theodore Kellogg,; three older brothers, Robert Kellogg of Olathe, KS, James (Sally) Kellogg of Peterson, IA. and Ted (Trina) Gilliam of Boulder CO.
Dave was born September 23, 1969 in Des Moines, IA. He tried his hand at marriage a few times but said he finally got it right when he wedded Tricia, whom he considered the love of his life and the best part of everyday, on February 25, 2006.
He earned his GED in 1990 and went on to attend Western Illinois University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science (1996) and Master of Arts (1998) degrees, both within law enforcement and justice administration.
From 2001 until his death, Dave worked at Carl Sandburg College, where he was an associate professor and coordinator of the criminal justice program as well as associate dean of career and corporate development. He loved his job and more importantly, those he spent his career with. He considered himself blessed to work with so many wonderful people and fortunate for the opportunity to touch so many wonderful lives and incredible minds. In 2011, he was named Sandburg’s Faculty Member of the Year. Dave served with the Faculty Advisement Council for American Association of Community Colleges and was the faculty representative to the Illinois Community College Faculty Association.
Dave also worked as Sandburg’s director of educational programs at Henry C. Hill Correctional Center from 2001-2004. He continued his commitment to inmate education as a volunteer with the adult Literacy program at Henry C. Hill correctional Center until 2016. He also served as an Executive Board Member to the Knox County Teen Court.
Prior to his time at Carl Sandburg College, Dave worked in the McDonough County Sheriff’s Department from 1993-1998 as a county correctional officer, court security officer and reserve deputy sheriff, and then with the Illinois Department of Corrections from 1998-2001 as a correctional officer and tactical response team member.
Dave served in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Illinois Army National Guard from 1989-1998. Those nine years alongside so many dedicated men during difficult times shaped him and provided him with lifelong friends.
His complete list of friends was too extensive to catalog, but he was especially influenced by Sandburg colleagues, G.W. Douglas, Julie Gibb, Diana Higgins, Lara Roemer and Dr. Lori Sundberg; his “man bros”, Neil Armstrong, Rich Bassford, Tony Bentley and Jon Bradburn; and the hundreds of students who came through the criminal justice program.
A Celebration of Life will be 2:00 pm Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Carl Sandburg College gymnasium in Galesburg. Pastor A.J. Reynolds of Harvest Bible Chapel in Monmouth will officiate with reflections by his son, Daniel; former Carl Sandburg President, Dr. Lori Sundberg; and fellow Sandburg instructors, G.W. Douglas and Lara Roemer. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials can be made to Harvest Bible Chapel, Monmouth, IL.
