Bernard K. Higgins, 92, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 11:50 pm, Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Wesley Village in Macomb, Illinois.

Bernard was born on January 22, 1926 in rural Schuyler County Illinois the second son of Harley H. and Gladys (Kimble) Higgins Lathrop. He graduated from Augusta High School and attended Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb for a short time. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in September 1943 during World War II serving on several air bases in Texas and was discharged in October 1945. He married Ella Louise Bilderback on October 19, 1945. He returned to Illinois where he worked for Brown Lynch Scott in Galesburg and Monmouth. He began working for Mayrath Industries in 1966 and retired from there in 1989.

Bernard was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monmouth. He was a past president of the Monmouth Exchange Club, member of the Elks Club and the American Legion Marion B. Fletcher post #136. Bernard, known to friends as Bee or Bernie, always seemed to have a project going of fixing up or remodeling homes. He enjoyed time spent with family, watching and playing golf, and morning coffee at Hardees with friends.

Surviving Bernard are his daughter Janis (John) Schreiber of Macomb; two granddaughters, Jonna Schreiber of Peoria, Julie (James) Perrott of Winston Salem, NC; one great granddaughter, Ophelia Perrott; one nephew, Daniel (Peggy) Higgins of Tennessee, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Louise; son, Rodney Higgins; brother, H. Dale Higgins; sister-in-law, Cecilia Higgins and nephew, Donald (Jeanne) Higgins.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Warren County Memorial Park, Monmouth with Rev. Jon Sims of the First United Methodist Church of Monmouth officiating. Cremation has been accorded. No visitation is scheduled. Memorials may be made to Hospice Compassus, the First United Methodist Church of Monmouth or Wesley Village Memory Care Household in Macomb.
