Betty J Toops

Betty J. Toops, 84, of Little York, IL, passed away at 10:10 a.m., Monday, January 22, 2018 at Monmouth Nursing Home, Monmouth.

She was born on June 19, 1933 in Maywood, IL, the daughter of Henry W. and Lillian L. (Becker) Phelps. Betty was raised and educated in Chicago, moving to Gladstone and graduating from G & O High School in 1951.

Betty married Maynard B. Toops, Sr., on February 14, 1953.

Betty first worked as a telephone operator in Burlington, IA. She then worked at Formfit and later Smolers in Monmouth as an inspector and packer. Betty also worked at Pinewood Manor as a nurse’s aid before retiring in 1997. She was an avid Elvis fan, enjoyed going to concerts with her friends, and liked flowers and gardening. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Surviving Betty are four children, Steve (Donna) Toops of Little York, IL, Dan Toops of Little York, IL, Deb (Mark Chandler) Hager of Oquawka, IL, and Tom (Alison) Toops of Knoxville, IL. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and her beloved companion, Jessie.

She is preceded in death by her parents, son Maynard Toops, Jr., and sister Cheryl Taylor.

Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Interment will be in Little York Cemetery, Little York, IL. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the Monmouth Nursing Home.
