David M. Sharp,75, of Monmouth, IL, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at the Allure of Knox County, Galesburg, IL.
Dave was born December 8, 1950 in Monmouth, the only child of Kenneth R and Margaret (Lucas) Sharp. He was raised and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1968 and later Monmouth College in 1973 with a degree in English.
Dave worked at Gamble’s, was a substitute teacher, he was a police officer for the City of Monmouth, later working as an EMT for United Ambulance in Monmouth. He later became an Investigator for the DCFS for several years. He worked at the Illinois Secretary of State at the Monmouth Driver’s License facility before becoming an Investigator for the Illinois Secretary of State before retiring in 2012. Dave also served on the Monmouth City Council for 25 years before being elected as Mayor in 1993 to 1997.
He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Monmouth and the Monmouth Lions Club. He enjoyed fast motorsports, cars, especially Firebirds, motorcycles and mowing lawns, his and his neighbors. He also enjoyed shooting and had a collection of firearms.
Dave’s home and heart was always open to those in need, especially local kids. He became the legal guardian to several kids in need. Dave cared, for those around him and his town. He tried to make a difference
Survivors include his “son”, Joel (Christina) Carlston of Casper, WY; foster son, Ronald Stegans of Portland, OR; “grandchildren”, Nicole (Adam) Stuve of Clarinda, IA, Garrett (Caitlyn) Carlston of Douds, IA and Wyatt (Ayden) Carlston of Ottumwa, IA; 7 “great-grandchildren”; dear friends, Mike and Dana Neilson of Monmouth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Monday, January 12, 2026 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Interment will be at Monmouth Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, January 11, 2026 at the funeral home from 1:00-3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Wounded Warriors and sent to the funeral home.
