Gary D Johnson

Gary Dean “Daddy Gary”, “Big Daddy” Johnson, 70, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 5:26 a.m., Monday, September 4, 2017 at OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center, Galesburg.

He was born on December 29, 1946 in Monmouth, IL, the son of Grover Delbert Cleveland and Dorothy (Lewis) Johnson. Gary was raised and educated in Monmouth and received his GED in Burlington, IA.

Gary first worked at Western Stoneware as a laborer; he then worked as the parts manager at Prince Pontiac, and later worked for the City of Monmouth for many years. He became a CNA and worked at LaMoine Nursing Home in Roseville, Pinewood Health care, where he was Physical Therapist and CNA, and Monmouth Nursing Home for several years, retiring in 2006 due to his health.

Gary was an avid baseball fan and loved his St. Louis Cardinals, making several weekend trips to see a game or two. He also coached Lions League Baseball for 9 years. Gary loved rock and roll music, especially the Rolling Stones, baseball, westerns, baseball, going fishing whenever he could get away, the Monmouth Bowling League, and did we mention baseball???

Gary married Beverly Jean Hoelscher on April 23, 1976; from this union they have two beautiful children; Amber and Tyler.

Surviving Gary are his children; daughter, Amber Johnson of Roseville, IL, son, Tyler Johnson of Monmouth; one brother, Lloyd “Babe” Johnson; one sister, Val Jean “Jeannie” (Jan) Holeman, all from Monmouth. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Germain Hope “Rosie” Haynes, and three brothers; Doyle “Frog” Lewis, Robert “Bob” Carlson, and Delbert “Pete” Johnson, and one niece.

Cremation rites have been accorded. No visitation or services are planned at this time. A memorial fund is being established, and will be designated at a later date; contributions may be left at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth.
