Helen J Slater

Helen J. Slater, 92, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 1:11 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2017 at Courtyard Estates, Monmouth.

She was born on July 23, 1925 in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of C. Oscar and Maude (Wetander) Nelson. Helen was raised and educated in Monmouth and attended Monmouth Schools, Farmers’ Academy in rural Monmouth, and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1943.

Helen married M. Deane Slater on September 19, 1943 at Fairview Center E.U.B Church in rural Monmouth; he preceded her in death in 2010.

Helen loved life with family and friends. She enjoyed sewing quilting, knitting, crocheting and reading. Helen was an active member of the Fairview Center Church in earlier years as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher and Deacon for several years. She was currently attending Harvest Bible Chapel, Monmouth. Helen took the first Nurse’s Aide course at Monmouth Hospital, offered by Carl Sandburg College and worked part time for a few years at the hospital. Helen was a long time member of the Hospital Auxiliary and served on the board for 12 years. She was a member of the Sunshine Girls, from Auxiliary.

Surviving Helen are her children, Bob (Pam) Slater of Bridgeville, DE; Bill (Karen) Slater of Oquawka, IL; Bonnie (Bob) Teske of Lakewood Ranch, FL; Becky (Jim) Moore of Monmouth, IL; and Betty (John) Frost of Aledo, IL. Her grandchildren, Cynthia (Kevin) Glisan; Jim (Tammy) Slater; Patty (Mike) Procino; Brandon (Rhiannon) Slater; Julie (Shawn) Moser; Bill (Jennifer) Slater; Nici (Mike) Jones; Kelli (Kyle) Kinzer; Megan (Matt) Heinbaugh; John (Chris) Frost; Dustin (Kim) Frost; and Britni (Justin) Ewing. Her great grandchildren, Emily, Erin, Joey, Jackie, Chelsey, Jacob, Jenna, Haley, Hunter, Austin, Abby, Gabrielle, Morgan, Alex, Marke, Payton, Bella, Beau, Lyla, Mallory, Slater, Grady, Codie, Brinley, Simon, Seth, Angus, Oen, Ava, Sophia, and Jady. Also surviving are two great great grandchildren, Sofia, and Lyla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Connie Lea Slater; brother, Robert O. Nelson and sister, Mary L. Hogue.

A private family graveside service will be at Monmouth Cemetery, Monmouth, IL. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, December 11, 2017 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Memorials can be made to the OSF Ladies Auxiliary or Harvest Bible Chapel, Monmouth.
