Janet A. Simpson

Janet A. Simpson, 86, of Alexis, IL, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.

Janet was born on September 12, 1940 in rural Gerlaw, IL the daughter of Pete and Anna Mae (Ryner) Shughart and she had two brothers and three sisters. She was raised and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1958.

Janet married Richard Simpson on September 5, 1960, at the Coldbrook Christian Church and he survives.

She worked tirelessly to maintain the house, keep the books for the farm, and run the grain cart or whatever needed to be done. She was always very active in church and community activities and loved supporting Kathy and Gary’s many school, 4H, and sports activities. Janet always enjoyed all sorts of craft projects and was as handy with a band saw as she was a sewing machine.

She was a member of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church. In recent years she was a Deacon and was always the first to volunteer for any project.

Janet enjoyed traveling with Richard and spending time at their condo on Lake of the Ozarks. There is nothing she enjoyed better than having coffee with friends.

Janet cherished spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy.

Janet is survived by her husband Richard and her daughter Kathy (Jeff) Dunn; her daughter-in-law, Gina Simpson; grandchildren Steven (Jill), Allison, Grace (Scotty), and Gretchen (Tyler) and great-grandchildren Noah, Ellen, Gus, and Lily; and many nephews and nieces.

Janet was preceded in death by her new born daughter Debra who passed in 1968 and by her son Gary who passed September 15, 2026; two brothers, Wayne Shughart and Jerry Shughart; 3 sisters, Celia Linze, Linda Heikes and Ellen Adkisson.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, November 11, 2026 at the Alexis United Presbyterian Church, Alexis IL. Burial will be in Norwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 pm, Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL. Memorials can be made to the Norwood Cemetery or the Alexis United Presbyterian Church and can be sent to the funeral home.
