John “Rod” Lemon, 84, of Monmouth, IL, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Rod was born on December 5, 1941, in Davenport, IA, the son of John B. and Clio (McIntire) Lemon. He was raised and educated in Aledo, graduating from Aledo High School in 1959. He later graduated from Monmouth College in 1963 and then earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Illinois in 1968.
Rod married Hallie Simpson at Kirk of the Lakes in Mundelein, IL on January 29, 1966 and she survives.
Rod served as a dedicated Professor of Economics at Monmouth College for 31 years, shaping generations of students with his insight, integrity, and passion for learning before retiring in 2007. Beyond the classroom, he applied his expertise as an Energy Consultant working at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and teaching students in Vietnam, South Africa and China. He also managed the family farm where he grew up. Rod took immense pride in his students, celebrating their achievements, and found great fulfillment in knowing he had played a part in their success.
He was a devoted member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. He also enjoyed fellowship and spirited political discussions with the Prairie Philosophers and as an original member of the Old Men's Bridge Club.
Rod found joy in tending his garden, traveling to new places, browsing antique shops, and spending time on the golf course. In 2008, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Monmouth College, where he attributed his success to the work ethic instilled by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Hallie Lemon of Monmouth, IL; his son, John P. (Denise) Lemon of St. Charles, IL.; his daughter, Kate L. (Reagan) Kinser of Dayton, TN; his grandchildren, Matthew Lemon, Lucas Lemon, Andrew Kinser and Sam Kinser and nieces Catherine and Jennie.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Clio Lemon; grandchildren, John and Hallie Kinser and his brother, Gene Lemon.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Faith United Presbyterian Church, Monmouth. Internment will take place at 11 a.m. at Candor Cemetery prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the College of Business at Monmouth College or Faith United Presbyterian Church and sent to the funeral home. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the local arrangements.
