Madge E. “Mij” Douglas, 94, of Monmouth, IL, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on May 6, 1931, in New Boston, IL, the daughter of William “Dutch” Arnold and Anna Mildred (Hartman) Willits. Mij was raised and educated in New Boston and graduated from New Boston High School in 1949.
Mij married Marion Ward Douglas on March 17, 1951, in Aledo, IL; he preceded her in death on May 8,1987, after sharing many years of love and devotion together.
Mij dedicated many years of her life to working in various areas of health care, where her compassion and strong work ethic were evident to all who knew her. She believed that everyone in care should be treated with dignity and respect. She had a deep appreciation for all types of music and was a talented seamstress, often sharing her skills with family and friends. She was a faithful member of Seaton Presbyterian Church in Seaton, IL, and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star of Galesburg. Above all else, Mij treasured time spent with her family and took great joy in being actively involved in their lives, especially those of her beloved grandchildren. She had a deep love of animals, especially Oliver, pictured with Midge above.
Surviving Mij are her children, Vanya Peterson of Monmouth, Shawna McCoy of Cornell, WI, Blaine (Sandy) Douglas of Seaton, IL, Adam (Tammy) Douglas of Aledo, IL; her grandchildren, Grant Peterson of Carlinville, IL, Mitchell Peterson of Monmouth, and Ashlie (Brian Good) Douglas of rural Galesburg, IL, Trevor (Sarah) McCoy of MN; her great grandchildren, Quincy Peterson, Adam Peterson, Benjamin Peterson, and Lucille Peterson; and her sister-in law, Wilma “Bunny” Willits of West Liberty, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; one grandson, Andrew Jared Douglas; and two sisters, Carol Willits and Dixie Neilson; her brother, Stuart Willits.
Cremation have been accorded. Per Mij’s wishes, no services are planned. A private family interment at Candor Cemetery, Seaton IL will take place at a later date. Memorials can be made to Western Illinois Animal Rescue (WIAR) and can be sent to the funeral home. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL is in charge of the arrangements.
