David J. Grimes

November 19, 1954 — July 8, 2019

Monmouth

David Jon “Dave” Grimes, 64, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 10:36 p.m., Monday, July 8, 2019 at the OSF Holy Family Medical Center, Monmouth.

David was born on November 19th, 1954 in Burlington, IA. He graduated from Stronghurst Southern High School in Stronghurst, IL in 1972, then continued his education at Oral Robert’s University (ORU) in Tulsa, OK where he studied Journalism. After spending time at ORU, David transferred to Evangel University in Springfield, MO where he earned his degree in Journalism and Communication. Upon graduation, David and his former wife of 19 years, Joy Grimes, eventually settled back in Tulsa, OK, where they had their two children, Joycilyn and Christopher. After his marriage ended, David moved back to the Monmouth, IL area, where he concluded his later years. David spent the majority of his career as a freelance writer working for local newspaper companies, “Tulsa World” in Tulsa, OK, “The Hawk Eye” in Burlington, IA, and several others around the Quad Cities. He also spent time with local radio stations, K95.5 and KRMG in Tulsa, OK as a radio personality and broadcaster, then as a radio broadcaster for KKMI and KBUR in Burlington, IA.

David enjoyed many interests, which included writing, watching ball games, and many outdoor activities. He was an avid writer and enjoyed the opportunity to express himself and his surroundings through the platform of writing. He loved all things sports and even more so when he could share that same interest with friends and family. He had a knack for memories and storytelling. He maintained a good sense of humor, and took no offense if he was the cause of a good laugh. He was always considerate, not only to those he knew as friends, but to those he just met. Though he kept to himself a majority of the time, David managed to connect with many people by impacting them through his acts of kindness and personal expressions. He truly believed in helping others, and did so even through his own hardships. He was a man of God, and stayed at peace with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If there’s anything he would want his friends and family to know, it would be that he is doing, “OK.”

David will certainly be missed, as he has touched those around him in a way that only a model being could. Though, he has moved on from this earth to join those who have gone before him, David’s character and impression will always be remembered.

David is preceded in death by his father, Reverend John F. Grimes, his mother, Marilyn P. Detrick, his grandfather, John Grimes, his grandmother, Rachel Grimes, his grandfather Forrest Detrick, and his grandmother, Eleanore Detrick.

Surviving David is his brother, Daniel Grimes of Midwest City, OK, his daughter, Joycilyn George of Oklahoma City, OK, his son Christopher Grimes of Tulsa, OK, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces.
