Dorothy Thornton, 82, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 2:40 am, Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at her home.

Dorothy was born November 7, 1937 in Monmouth, IL the daughter of Wilson Edward “Hoop” and Helen Louise (Thomas) Brock.  She was raised and educated in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1955.

She married Linus C. Thornton on September 19, 1958 at the First Christian Church in Monmouth; they were married for 61 years before he passed away on November 30, 2019.

Dorothy worked at Wells Pet Food as a secretary.  She then worked in the Warren County Treasurers Office.  Dorothy also worked in Bookkeeping at Community National Bank in Monmouth.  She attended Heritage Bible Church in Monmouth.  Dorothy enjoyed crocheting and was a member of the quilting club at Heritage Bible Church.  She spent several years bowling in Monmouth, Galesburg, and Biggsville; she won several tournaments.  Dorothy was a loving and giving person who put the needs of others above her own.  She volunteered at OSF Holy Family Medical Center as an escort and gift shop attendant.  Dorothy was the recent recipient of the “Inner Light Award”.  She was also an honorary member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.  Dorothy loved to bake and spend time with her family and friends.  She was known to many as the “Gripper Lady” and the “Hat Lady”.

Survivors include her daughter, Robin K. Thornton-Cooper of Monmouth, IL; three grandchildren, Jaylene Cooper, Shane Cooper, Douglas (Megan) Thornton; three great grandchildren, Adison Thornton, Cooper Thornton, Quinnten Gidley; one brother, John T. Brock of Casa Grande, AZ; one aunt, Hazel Van Winkle of Holton, KS; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, Roderick Edward Thornton, and sister, Carol Ann Pulver.

Cremation rites have been accorded.  Per her wishes, there will be no visitation or services.  Memorials can be made to the Heritage Bible Church, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, or the OSF Holy Family Volunteers.
